Flux pile-up and plasma depletion at the high latitude dayside magnetopause during southward interplanetary magnetic field: a cluster event study
نویسندگان
چکیده
An event of strong flux pile-up and plasma depletion at the high latitude magnetopause tailward of the cusp has been analyzed based on observations by the suite of Cluster spacecraft. The multi-satellite analysis facilitates the separation of temporal and spatial features and provides a direct estimate for the strength of the plasma depletion layer for this event. A doubling of the magnetic field strength and a forty percent reduction of the density are found. Our analysis shows that roughly half of the total magnetic field increase occurs within 0.6RE of the magnetopause and another quarter within a distance of 1.2RE . In addition, the plasma depletion signatures exhibit temporal variations which we relate to magnetopause dynamics.

Dependence of the depth of the Earth ’ s plasma depletion layer on the interplanetary magnetic field direction and the Alfvénic Mach number
The Earth’s magnetosheath, the transition region between the Earth’s magnetopause and the bow shock, is a space laboratory for the investigation of magnetoactive plasmas. Analogeous studies are also the aim of the LAPLAS experiment planned for the FAIR facility at GSI [1]. One of the recent problems of the magnetosheath physics is the dependence of its plasma depletion layer on the direction of...
متن کاملSignature of Saturn’s auroral cusp: Simultaneous Hubble Space Telescope FUV observations and upstream solar wind monitoring
[1] Model simulations by Bunce et al. (2005a) have shown that direct precipitation of electrons in Saturn’s dayside cusp regions is not capable of producing significant FUV aurora. Instead, they suggested the possibility that the FUV bright emissions sometimes observed near noon are associated with reconnection occurring at the dayside magnetopause, possibly pulsed, analogous to flux transfer e...
متن کاملSurvival of flux transfer event (FTE) flux ropes far along the tail magnetopause
[1] During intervals of southward IMF, magnetic reconnection can result in the formation of flux transfer events (FTEs) on the dayside magnetopause which travel along the magnetopause in the anti-sunward direction. Of particular interest is their fate and the role they play transporting solar wind plasma into the magnetosphere. We present the discovery of FTEs far along the distant tail magneto...
متن کاملFirst simultaneous observations of flux transfer events at the high-latitude magnetopause by the Cluster spacecraft and pulsed radar signatures in the conjugate ionosphere by the CUTLASS and EISCAT radars
Cluster magnetic field data are studied during an outbound pass through the post-noon high-latitude magnetopause region on 14 February 2001. The onset of several minute perturbations in the magnetospheric field was observed in conjunction with a southward turn of the interplanetary magnetic field observed upstream by the ACE spacecraft and lagged to the subsolar magnetopause. These perturbation...
متن کاملOn the location of dayside magnetic reconnection during an interval of duskward oriented IMF
We present spaceand ground-based observations of the signatures of magnetic reconnection during an interval of duskward-oriented interplanetary magnetic field on 25 March 2004. In situ field and plasma measurements are drawn from the Double Star and Cluster satellites during traversals of the pre-noon sector dayside magnetopause at low and high latitudes, respectively. These reveal the typical ...
